VAT and rescue teams

You may have heard some of our team members on the radio recently or seen them on television talking about the paying of fuel duty and VAT on certain search and rescue equipment. The teams across England and Wales want every penny of donations to go towards rescue equipment, instead of giving away 17.5% on new purchases to the government.

Although the government can no longer exempt us from paying VAT, they can decide refund it each year. In England and Wales, this would represent a refund of about £200, 000 to £300, 000 and bring us closer in line with Scotland and Ireland who receive annual grants from their government to assist with providing these essential search and rescue services.

The government would struggle to provide the same service without these volunteer teams, who are being called out more and more each year to assist the full time emergency services, not just on the hills but at major flooding incidents and heavy snowfall.
